Social Interest Solutions Releases Infographic Illustrating the Impact of the Affordable Care Act’s “Family Glitch”

Current Rules Lock Millions Out of Lower-Cost Coverage Options

Social Interest Solutions (SIS), a mission-driven, nonprofit organization dedicated to leveraging technology innovation and influencing policy to improve consumers’ access to eligible health and human services, today released the third installment of its ACA Spotlight infographic series, The ACA Family Glitch. The infographic illustrates how a glitch in the Affordable Care Act’s (ACA) rules impacts the cost of health insurance affordability coverage for some working families.

Current ACA rules determine a family to have access to affordable employer coverage if an employer offers an employee individual insurance coverage that costs less than 9.66 percent of the family income (in 2016). “What is not taken into account is the fact that family coverage typically costs three to four times more than individual coverage,” said Terri Shaw, Director of Policy at Social Interest Solutions. “This scenario, referred to as the Family Glitch, is leaving some working families without access to tax credits to subsidize insurance costs.”

The ACA Family Glitch Spotlight demonstrates the cost of insurance for working families affected by the Family Glitch and reveals the financial impact on families as a result of insurance affordability being based on individual coverage costs versus family coverage costs.
